The hugest log-rolling and clearing match of the season occurred on the prairie
plantation of Messrs Roberts & Salter in this county several days ago.
One hundred and six stalwart axemen were engaged at one time in felling the
leafy monarchs of Cubahatchee swamp and these were followed by two hundred of the
hands who rolled the huge logs together and piled the brush heaps. Twenty six acres
of heavily timbered bottom land were thus cleared in about 10 hours.

The largest cotton farm in Alabama. The farm of Messrs Roberts
and Salter about five miles North of this city. In the last four years they have
cleared 900 acres of land and dug 25 miles of ditches. The small army of laborers
and their families numbering some 800 are housed and are apparently very contented.
Each family has its garden apart and raises pigs, chickens etc.
In 1882 with a much smaller force and less land in cultivation they made 680
bales of cotton. To make this crop the services of 392 regular laborers are employed.
159 mules and horses are worked regularly, 52 two horse wagons, 12 one horse wagons
and 1 four horse wagon are used. The firm buys its plows and hoes by the hundreds.

changed again and this time it is known as Hamilton Station. What next?

The pleasant little town of Downs is situated on the SAM RR just 10 mi from US,
We have two good churches, that of the Presbyterian being right in town. The
Methodist have a neat and pretty church edifice at Edwarts just one mile from here.
Rev W C Naye from Mt Meigs is their pastor this year. We have a good school well
attended three miles from us taught by Miss Mollie Bickley of Clayton. Downs has
long wanted a depot and their long felt want has been supplied. The depot at Edwarts
was put upon a flat car a few weeks since and brought to our town. By means of the
long distance telephone put in by two of our progressive and wide awake merchants
and planters Messrs R M Hall and W S Harris we now have connection with "all the
world."
