PARADISE, Rev. Phillip, a resident of Montgomery, AL, expired Saturday, November 4, 2000.  Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 11, 2000 at 12:00 pm at the Rice Temple A.O.H. Church of God, with the Bishop Franklin McNeil officiating.  Burial will follow at the Greenwood & Serenity Memorial Gardens (Veteran's Park).  In the early 1970's it was Paradise who filed the lawsuit that forced the State Department of Public Safety to integrate its ranks. This case lead to a landmark, 1972 court order by the former US District Judge Frank Johnson, that required the Public Safety to hire one black trope for every white trooper until the force was 25 percent black.  By March 1972, training began for the first integrated cadet class in the history of the State Troopers.  Now, more than a quarter century later, blacks comprise 28 percent of Public Safety sworn officers, ranging from new recruits to the highest level of the Department.  Paradise was also a plaintiff in another history-making case that challenged Montgomery County's and City's hiring practices.  The 1972 Federal class-action suit forced officials to step up the hiring of minorities.  Paradise ultimately went to work for the City of Montgomery as a firefighter.  He later joined the firefighting force at the US Department of Veteran Affairs in Tuskegee, Alabama, until his death.  Reverend Paradise leaves to cherish his memories a "strong" devoted wife, Delois Paradise, of Montgomery, AL; four daughters, Ms. Lastella Paradise, Mrs. Sandra (Donald) Burris, Mr. Ronita Paradise, and Mrs. Janice (Keith) Braswell, all of Montgomery, AL; four sons, Mr. Phillip Paradise, III, Mr. Antonio Mc Clure, both of Montgomery, AL, Elder James E. (Barbara) Palmer, Jr. of Clarksville, Tennessee and Sergeant First Class Robert (Brenda) Palmer of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; a dear mother, Mrs. Mary Paradise of Montgomery, AL; one sister, Mrs. Diane Simpson of Montgomery, AL; one brother, Mr. Marvin Paradise of Montgomery, AL; one grandfather-in-law, Deacon Charlie Jackson of Montgomery; one uncle, Mr. Boy Glenn of Dayton, Ohio; seven sister-in-laws,, especially Miss Debra Jackson and Mrs. JaCynthia Paradise, both of Montgomery, AL; five brother-in-laws and several nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.  The family extends special thanks to Doctors Leon Davis, Patricia Martin, Doyin Ogunbi, Wick Many, their office and staff and the entire staff of 3 North, Jackson Hospital.  Rev Paradise will lie in state one hour prior to service.  The Montgomery Advertiser, November 8, 2000
