The transcription of the 1900 Macon County AL Population Schedule is still underway. This is a large project which will take months to complete. When searching for a surname, the best approach would be to use the search engine that appears on the homepage. You can also scan the index by sheet(below). The main purpose of the index is to track the generation of surnames that has been transcribed. It can also be used to browse those surnames where a question mark (? or **) appears--meaning that the transcriber was unable to determine the last name due to the penmanship of the census taker or extranneous markings made the surname illegible for full or partial transcribing. Please keep in mind, that the available census data was still included with those surnames that were questionable. Further, the 1900 census data transcribed here does not include some of the information that was gathered by the census takers. For example, Can Read?, Can Write?, Can Speak English?, Home Rent or Mortagaged?. Information is only provided for the relevant data that researchers need to make a possible family link.

In addition to vital information requested on most census, this particular census also provides information on those women who had children: How many children did she give birth to and How many children were still living at the time the census was taken. Further information includes the birthplace of the father and the birthplace of the mother. With this information, it's quite possible that your research could lead to an entirely different state.

As in all transriptions, there are possibilities of errors: the initial record may not be correct or the rekeyed data was entered incorrectly. For example, the date of birth and ages may not match. The initial records were left as they were so that the researcher could cross-reference the schedule with the soundex cards to verify accuracy.
